BTF’s 2021 Impact Review Highlights Progress Toward Building a Sustainable Workforce

A skilled talent shortage has strained the residential construction industry for several years, but hope is on the horizon. BTF’s inaugural Impact Review highlights the foundation’s progress toward overcoming this deficit and building a sustainable workforce by 2030.

BTF Helps Single Mother of Two Find a Career that Makes Her Proud

When Tiffany Mobley decided it was time to change her life, she was a single mother with two teenage boys. She had not finished high school and worked as a forklift driver, a job with no growth prospects. 

Tiffany wanted to improve herself and her situation and inspire her sons by advancing her education and beginning a new career path. She enrolled at Florida Career College to finish her high school diploma and earn her HVAC certification. 

After achieving her educational goals, Tiffany was nervous about entering a male-dominated industry. With BTF's help and coaching, she found her confidence, pushed forward, and joined Del-Air Heating and Air Conditioning in Jacksonville, Fla.

Tiffany is motivated to make her sons proud and share her belief that a woman can do anything a man can do. Now, she is on a meaningful career path in a job she enjoys with opportunities to advance and make a better life for herself and her family.

Illustrated Children’s Book Someone Builds the Dream Inspires Families to Celebrate the Tradespeople Who Build Our World

WRITER LISA WHEELER AND ILLUSTRATOR LOREN LONG EXPLORE THE LIVES OF BUILDERS

BTF engages with young people in high schools, trade schools, and communities to encourage their interest and exploration of careers in residential construction.

In their book Someone Builds the Dream, writer Lisa Wheeler and illustrator Loren Long introduce another audience to careers in the building industry—children ages five to eight years old. 

Someone Builds the Dream is a delightful exploration of the types of work that go into building everything around us–from bridges and wind farms, to amusement parks and houses.

Seeing an opportunity, BTF began sharing this book with all partners, and with elementary school teachers, to engage the youngest students in learning about homebuilding. Through Someone Builds the Dream, BTF found a new way to share what makes building industry careers exciting, creative, and fulfilling.

Total construction starts pushed 16% higher in October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.01 trillion, according to Dodge Construction Network. Nonresidential building starts gained 29% and nonbuilding moved 52% higher in October, while residential starts lost 8%.

Construction worker shortage has reached “crisis” levels

For career switchers looking for a new path that doesn’t necessarily require a college degree, they could do worse than the building trades. To keep pace with current construction demand, and account for attrition, 740,000 new construction workers are needed each year for the next three years, a report by the Home Builders Institute contends.
